Ambleside to Troutbeck, returning over Wansfell

The National Trust circuit passes through Skelghyll Woods and Troutbeck before returning over Wansfell Pike. This is a hill walk, not a longer version of a flat town stroll. A visit inside Townend needs separate opening and admission checks.

Where to park in Ambleside

Use Waterhead as your starting area for the Roman Fort rather than assuming every Ambleside car park is lakeside. For the longer circuit from Market Cross, compare town-centre long-stay parking such as Rydal Road. National Trust membership does not make council car parks free. Budget parking time for the walk, breaks and the return to your car.

Is the Wansfell route an easy family walk?

The National Trust grades its Troutbeck and Wansfell circuit moderate and describes steep and uneven ground. It is not suitable for people with limited mobility. Decide according to experience, weather and the needs of everyone in your group, rather than the distance alone.
