The Derwentwater shore and the old railway offer two very different walks from Keswick. Choose by starting point and current access, not just distance: both official route pages carried access warnings when checked for this guide.

Railway trail: check bridge works before travelling
Notice checked 4 September 2026: a 75cm pinch point near the Threlkeld end restricts access until 14 September. From around that date, a western bridge is scheduled to close for up to eight weeks. Do not assume a through route or wheelchair access; consult the latest National Park notice.

The National Park warns that the narrow, sloping approach to the viewpoint is damaged and unsafe for people on wheels. Check the latest repair notice; the general Miles Without Stiles grading does not override this warning.

The normal out-and-back route follows the former railway through the Greta gorge. Bridge works may prevent completing it; plan only around the sections the National Park confirms are available.

Where to park in Keswick
Lakeside is the practical parking comparison for the theatre and Derwentwater shore. The railway trail starts across town near the old station. Set your destination for the route you intend to walk, and pay for time to return as well as time on the trail. Bell Close is a short-stay car park, not an automatic choice for a longer outing.
